Welcome back to Faith & Joy, a 2x a week newsletter that makes you smile no matter how hard you try not to!
Hey everyone,
Happy Friday! Do me a favor and take a deep breath. Do ya feel that? That’s the feeling of cleaner air entering your lungs!
According to an article from Scientific American, wind and solar energy have surpassed coal as the largest generator of power in the United States. It’s a first in the nation’s energy-creating history and one that’s more than welcome by many.
While we’re on the subject of clean air, are you as excited for the peak of the Perseid meteor showers this weekend as we are? Meteors will streak across the sky, presenting the potential to see up to 50 fiery space rocks blazing through the atmosphere in a single shower between August 12th and 13th. Thanks to the moon phase (waning crescent), the moon will only be throwing off about 10% of its illumination potential, and will present ideal conditions for seeing the Perseids in all their splendor.
In other fantastic news, AI is reportedly manufacturing “highly effective antibodies that humans can’t even imagine.” Essentially, it’s scoping out new therapies that haven’t even been dreamt of by us mere humans yet. How so? By using its immense processing power to sift through unfathomable amounts of data that people simply can’t, it’s using the knowledge to build "previously unimagined molecules.”

The Swanton Public Library in Ohio has a unique employee that's capturing the hearts of its visitors: Benny, a 3-month-old tuxedo kitten.
Benny was rescued by the Wood County Humane Society after being heartlessly thrown from a moving truck. From there, Benny's life took a turn for the better when Anna Burwell, the library's adult services coordinator, adopted him. Recognizing his charm, she introduced him to the library, where he quickly became a favorite.
He is especially among the children.
Benny's daily routine involves energetically exploring the library, playfully engaging with the children, and then settling down for story time. "The kids love him," Burwell shared, highlighting the positive impact the feline has had on the library's atmosphere.
Visitors often inquire about Benny, making him a star attraction.
The library envisions a bright future for Benny. Plans are underway to train him as an official therapy cat, leveraging his gentle nature to provide comfort to visitors. Moreover, his presence is seen as a potential catalyst to inspire young readers.
"Benny is a good listener. He makes the children feel comfortable," remarked Burwell.
Benny's heartwarming journey, from a tragic beginning to becoming a beacon of joy in a library, exemplifies the transformative power of kindness and second chances.
If you're ever in Swanton, Ohio, a visit to the library might not only introduce you to captivating stories but also to Benny, the cat with a tale of resilience and hope.

A New Year's party in Gonaives, Haiti, took an unexpected turn for Jimmy Amisial, a student from Texas. While on his way to the celebration, Jimmy stumbled upon a small crowd surrounding a baby abandoned in a pile of trash.
The 22-year-old recalled, “It was in a pile of trash crying and there wasn’t a single soul who wanted to do anything about it.”
While villagers hesitated, fearing the baby might be cursed, Jimmy bravely stepped in.
“He had no clothes on. He had fire ants crawling all over him... When I picked him up, he immediately stopped crying.”
Jimmy took the 3-month-old baby to his mother, Elicie Jean, who was initially taken aback but welcomed the child.
“While cleaning him we noticed he had some fire ant bites and an allergic reaction, so we used some lotion to help stop the pain,” Jimmy shared.
After reporting the incident to the police, a judge inquired if Jimmy would consider taking interim custody of the baby, as no one had claimed him. The decision weighed heavily on Jimmy.
“After he asked me that question, I had a lot of sleepless nights. I tossed and turned but my mother reminded me things happen for a reason,” he reflected.
Eventually, he chose to care for the child, naming him Emilio Angel Jeremih. However, the adoption process in Haiti proved costly, reaching up to $40,000. Undeterred, Jimmy took a year off from school in 2020 to focus on Emilio's custody, working part-time jobs to support their needs.
To fund Emilio's adoption, Jimmy launched an online campaign aiming to raise $60,000. To his astonishment, donations exceeded $79,000.
The surplus will be used for Emilio's education and to support Haitian orphans. Now, four years since that fateful night, Emilio is thriving and attending school. Jimmy, now 27, plans to resume his studies once Emilio's custody is settled.
His ultimate goal? To establish a non-profit to assist orphans and underprivileged families in Haiti.
Reflecting on their journey, Jimmy said, “I want him to be happy. I want to teach him how to love and I want him to know that even though he was left alone, he’s not alone.”
