WOW

Back in 2018, Marta Nowicka stumbled upon an old garage in Dalston, London, and saw more than just a storage space. She saw a future home.

Without even seeing it in person, she bought the garage online and embarked on a journey to turn it into a three-story home. "Home to vintage fashion stores, hip cocktail bars, and basement clubs," as she puts it, Dalston's vibe was perfect for her vision.

Marta named her creation "The Gouse." It's a clever blend of a garage turned into a house, but with all the luxury and modern amenities you could dream of.

Despite the transformation, she kept the garage's original cedar shingles on the exterior, making it blend with the Victorian-style houses in the neighborhood. "I wanted it to still blend within the neighborhood," Marta shares about her design philosophy.

Inside "The Gouse," the creativity really shines. Marta worked magic with the limited space, turning the constraints into innovative design solutions.

"Starting off with the house’s main door, we removed the old garage’s wooden door and replaced it with an unnoticeable door," she explains. The house is filled with light, thanks to see-through glass floor sections.

It also features a 'living wall' that brings nature indoors. "The atmosphere of the renovated garage definitely strikes a home run for those who love to be near nature while staying at home," Marta says while beaming with pride.

In just a few months, she transformed the 45-square-meter garage into a 126-square-meter living space that feels like a modern mini-mansion.

Marta's favorite touch? The 3rd-floor bathroom boasting a glass ceiling, offering views of the sky.

"Whoever uses it would have a fascinating view of the skies during daytime and stars at night," she says. And she wasn’t kidding, either. The way the light pours into the space is absolutely stunning.

To give folks a closer look at how all these elements came together to create a unique and modern living space, she gave a video tour that easily takes the breath away.

While her neighbors couldn’t see Marta’s unique vision in the beginning, they sure are seeing it now.

ANIMALS

In the snow-covered woods of Holland, New York, a baby cow named Bonnie made a daring escape from a life destined for the slaughterhouse.

After fleeing her farm, where the death of the owner led to a dire fate for the cattle, Bonnie found refuge in the forest. Here, amidst 3 feet of snow, her tale took a turn towards the extraordinary.

As the search for Bonnie waned with the snowy onslaught of winter, many gave up hope of finding her. Fortuitously, she stumbled upon a new kind of family.

A herd of deer welcomed her into their fold. After all, these creatures aren’t so different from herself, so why not?

Together, they roamed the forest while providing an unusual yet heartwarming sight. Thankfully, all of this was captured on Becky Bartel’s trail cameras.

Becky, the landowner, was astonished to find a cow living among deer on her property. "It made a lot of sense since both cows and deer are herd animals," she noted, moved by the bond they shared.

Becky's discovery led to a “daily ritual” of care and kindness. Despite Bonnie's initial wariness, Becky provided her with food and bedding, slowly earning her trust.

Bonnie began warming up to Becky. Soon, she was no longer afraid to come up to her asking for snacks.

Sadly, the threat of neighbors and the harsh realities of the wild loomed over Bonnie's newfound freedom. Wariness of all that might beset the sweet cow prompted Becky to seek a permanent solution for her safety.

The mission to bring Bonnie to a sanctuary was fraught with challenges. Her distrust of humans meant that traditional rescue methods were out of the question.

With patience and strategy, including sedatives hidden in food, the team from Farm Sanctuary, led by National Director Susie Coston, finally succeeded.

🗿 ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY…

Did you know that on this day in 1792, the Coinage Act was passed, establishing the United States Mint and authorizing the creation of several denominations of gold and silver coins?

This significant legislation laid the foundational framework for the U.S. currency system, marking a pivotal moment in the country's economic history. Specifically, the act authorized the production of the $10 Eagle, $5 half-Eagle, and $2.50 quarter-Eagle gold coins, as well as the silver dollar, half dollar, quarter, dime, and half-dime.

This move was instrumental in standardizing the currency in a young nation that was still finding its feet on the global stage. Prior to this, a variety of foreign and colonial currencies circulated within the country, creating confusion and hindering economic activity.

The creation of a national mint and the introduction of a standardized currency system helped to stabilize the economy, facilitate trade, and promote growth.

The Mint's first facility was located in Philadelphia, then the capital of the United States, and it began operations in producing the newly authorized coinage, thereby laying the groundwork for a robust economic future for the country.

Later on…

1827 - Inventor Joseph Dixon revolutionizes writing around the world from Salem, Massachusetts when he begins mass-producing lead pencils.

1877 - The White House lawn witnessed its first Easter egg roll, turning it into an annual springtime tradition enjoyed by children and presidents alike.

1877 - A 14-year-old daredevil named Rossa Matilda Richter, also known as Zazel, wowed audiences as the first human cannonball at London's Royal Aquarium, marking a high-flying moment in entertainment history.

1902 - Lights, camera, action! The "Electric Theatre" opened its doors in Los Angeles, California, becoming the first full-time movie theater in the United States, and paving the way for Hollywood's future.
