SMILES

The holiday season can be a rollercoaster of emotions for families of military personnel, and Kim Harris, a math teacher with a heart of gold, was riding this rollercoaster.

Her son, Army Spc. Ethan Harris was far away in Afghanistan. All she wanted for Christmas was him, safe and sound at home. It's the kind of wish that tugs at your heartstrings, especially when you're hanging stockings for someone who's halfway around the world.

Thankfully, there was a Christmas breakfast at Prairie Heights High School, where Kim works. There was also a lottery- the kind that lets you ask Santa for anything you want.

Kim, probably dreaming of a white Christmas with her son, had her name called. Little did she know, the whole thing was a setup, a secret plan brewing faster than the school's morning coffee.

Channeling her inner child, Kim sits on Santa's lap. She's all about peace and goodwill, like a walking, talking Christmas carol.

But when Santa gets nosy about her best gift ever, she mentions her son's safe return to the U.S. Fortunately, Santa's got more up his sleeve than just candy canes and “ho-ho-hos”.

After hearing all of her Christmas wishes, “Santa” decided to come clean. The man behind the mask was none other than Ethan, her “deployed” son.

Ethan, the sneaky soldier, had been hiding out at his sister's house to pull off this epic surprise. It's a story that's part Christmas miracle, part military mission, and all heart, and the video is worth every bit of the watch!

ANIMALS

Have you ever heard of a husky and an owl becoming best buds? Neither had we... until now, that is.

Ilona the husky and Nyusha the snow owl have captured more attention than they bargained for with a heartwarming video. Their apparent affection for each other is simply too precious to miss.

Their extraordinary friendship began with a simple act of compassion. A man discovered Nyusha, a helpless young owl, alone in the cold.

The rescuer waited for the owl's mom to appear but when he realized mom wasn't coming back, he stepped in. He cared for Nyusha, feeding her and giving her a home, unknowingly setting the stage for a beautiful bond to form.

Two years later Ilona, a husky puppy, entered the picture. The man introduced Ilona to Nyusha, and what unfolded was a beautiful, natural connection.

Nyusha adapted to her new companion, learning to understand and reciprocate Ilona's playful behavior, a remarkable adaptation for an owl.

Needless to say, this avian-canine banter is too adorable to sum up in a few words. They’re so cute that their unique bond has captivated hearts worldwide.

As one commenter put it, “I think we are all basically the same inside: we need love, friendship, compassion, all the things that make life worthwhile.”

💭 QUOTE OF THE DAY

“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

— John 16:33

🗿 ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY…

Did you know that on this day in 1865, the world of coffee brewing experienced a major advancement?

James H. Mason of Massachusetts received a patent for the first U.S. coffee percolator. It was a device that would revolutionize the way coffee was made and enjoyed.

Before Mason's invention, coffee brewing was a more cumbersome process, often involving boiling or steeping the coffee grounds in a pot. Mason's percolator introduced a more refined method, where water cycled through the coffee grounds, extracting flavor more efficiently and consistently. This innovation was not just a leap in convenience but also in the quality of the brewed coffee.

Later on…

1878 - Philadelphia becomes a beacon of retail innovation as the first U.S. store installs electric lights, illuminating the future of shopping.

1924 - A future star takes her first steps into the limelight: Frances Gumm, later known as Judy Garland, at just 2½ years old, debuts as 'Baby Frances' in show business.

1933 - A milestone in broadcasting history: American engineer Edwin Howard Armstrong is granted the patent for FM radio, setting the stage for a new era in radio communication.

1957 - The Paramount Theatre in NYC hosts Alan Freed's "Christmas Show of Stars," featuring a lineup of musical giants including the Everly Brothers, Paul Anka, Fats Domino, and Jerry Lee Lewis, for a series of 14 spellbinding performances.
