OPTIMISM

In Pocahontas County High, a unique melody of determination and unity began to play out when the school band found themselves suddenly without a director.

The news left them with a choice- to disband or forge on. 10 band members chose the latter - all of them drummers.

I’ve been in the band for seven years. I love it! It’s too important for too many reasons,” student-nominated director Hailey Fitzgerald explains.

In other words, they had to make it work. Their first public performance was a surprising revelation of their ability and their support network. Approaching the football field, they were greeted by posters cheering them on.

The gesture filled them with gratitude and gusto, and the Pocahontas County Warriors won the game. While Hailey playfully shrugs, saying, “They won, it was the only one we went to,” the band’s triumph was unmistakable.

Navigating the challenges of selecting suitable music, learning new instruments, and adapting to their size, the band has embraced a spirit of creativity and cooperation. Their journey has been a blend of learning and improvisation.

We’ve gone from higher grade pieces to lower grade pieces just because we don’t have many instruments in our band. We’ve become very creative!” Jadyn Lane shared.

Their recent success notwithstanding, all 10 band members credit their short list of rules for keeping them running. They created them on their own when they decided to take over band and haven't veered from them since.

SMILES

Houston resident Annette Cruz is a self-proclaimed "fisher" of celebrities who recently embarked on a unique adventure. With her grandsons Caleb and Elijah by her side, they went “fishing”. And that’s when they found him.

Their quest wasn’t merely for autographs with stars but for genuine, heartwarming interactions. Their unsuspecting target was a “superstar” actor known for on-screen action and his off-screen kindness. And he was about to turn a simple day into an unforgettable memory.

Elijah, eyes alight with a mixture of awe and youthful curiosity, asked for something off the cuff. His voice a mere whisper, grew steadier as he asked the actor for a playful game of catch. The actor’s response, also initially a mumble, transformed into warm and inviting acceptance.

His simple “Yeah, come on, let’s go,” formed a spontaneous bubble of pure, unbridled joy between them. The following 30 seconds became an eternal snapshot of simplicity and happiness.

Elijah, his nerves dancing amidst the exhilaration, later admitted to the butterflies fluttering in his stomach. He was “playing catch with a famous superstar.” But in that moment, celebrity status faded. What was left was a genuine connection between a man and a boy, both sharing an ordinary yet wonderful interaction.

Caleb etched his own memory by capturing a selfie that spanned the worlds between celebrated actor and awestruck fan. His simple request for a picture turned into a cherished keepsake, guaranteed to spark smiles and conversations in the years to follow.

This story of spontaneous kindness and unabashed joy leaves us pondering… who is this actor with a heart so kind?

💭 QUOTE OF THE DAY

“You must never forget that greatness does not guarantee happiness but goodness always does.”

🗿 ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY…

Did you know that on this day in 1792, the cornerstone for the White House was laid, marking the beginning of its construction?

The design for the iconic building was selected through a competition won by Irish-born architect James Hoban. His design was inspired by the Leinster House in Dublin, Ireland, and was chosen by President George Washington. Little did either know that it also marked the commencement of an eight-year project.

President John Adams and his wife Abigail became the first occupants of the White House in 1800, though still unfinished. This move symbolized the establishment of the presidential residence.

Other notable occurrences on this day include…

  • 1773 - Astronomers were astounded by the discovery of the first spiral galaxy, forever changing our understanding of the cosmos.

  • 1792 - The "Old Farmer's Almanac" debuted, edited by the visionary Robert Thomas, and quickly became a household staple.

  • 1860 - The skies above Boston witnessed a historic moment as the first aerial photo in the US was captured from a balloon, offering a bird's-eye view of the city.

  • 1884 - Timekeeping was revolutionized when Greenwich was designated as the universal time reference, setting the standard for time zones worldwide.
