Surgeons Reattach 12-Year-Old Boy's Head

Surgeons are celebrating a huge win after attempt to reattach a boy's head.

Welcome back to Faith & Joy, a weekly newsletter that makes you smile no matter how hard you try not to!

Hey everyone,

Good morning and happy Tuesday! It looks like we’re waking up to a world of good news this morning, especially on the environmental front.

For starters, “green architecture” is giving a nod to the past while getting a major boost with the implementation of these ancient Chinese skywells. The benefits of being a student of nature don’t stop there, though.

Researchers have just managed to eke out a mind-blowing explanation of how mushrooms can “live for hundreds of years without getting cancer”! As if that weren’t enough to make us stop what we’re doing and devote our collective attention to these mysterious life forms, scientists have opened up a well of hope with another discovery. Apparently, some fungi like to “eat plastic” and can do so in 140 days!

In even more adorable news, a deep dive into the data on dolphins has shown that these sea creatures share a very specific trait with humans. They speak to their newborns in baby talk! If that’s not amazing, I don’t know what is.

Our incredible environment isn’t the only bearer of beautiful news, however. This edition’s featured stories show that people are batting some serious wins worth celebrating! ❤️

A nurse couldn’t believe what she was seeing when her son sent her proof that she delivered her own daughter-in-law!

22 years ago, Mary Ann West was working as a nurse in the Lakeview Hospital labor and delivery ward. It just so happens that her very own daughter-in-law was making her way into the world on her shift and in the very same room!

"To know that I was holding my future daughter-in-law in my arms, and now that precious little baby is going to be part of our family forever," was absolutely stunning, West said.

West’s son, Tyler, met his future bride, Kelsey Poll, 2 years ago after meeting her as his bank teller. It wasn’t long before he found himself smitten and dating his future wife.

Fast forward to now, and the two are happily married and enjoying exploring each other’s past moments. The ones that have brought them to now.

As fate would have it, they had to go all the way back to the beginning.

As the couple were flipping through baby photos, they saw something that stood out immediately. It was an image of Kelsey, fresh from the wombs and being swaddled by none other than nurse Mary Ann West herself!

"Tyler and Kelsey sent me a text and said, 'Um, you delivered Kelsey!' I said, 'What?''' Nurse West joyfully recalls.

That’s when they sent her the photo and Mary Ann suddenly recalled the whole event. Kelsey’s mom had been wrecked with nerves and Mary Ann stepped in to soothe them.

Upon seeing the photo, Mary Ann’s son could come to only one conclusion- they were always meant to be a family.

"It just seemed like it was meant to be, ever since she was born," Tyler concluded.

A 12-year-old boy from Jerusalem, Israel is alive and well after incredibly skilled surgeons spent hours “reattaching” his head.

It's a tale that defies imagination and highlights the incredible advancements in modern medicine. Get ready for a captivating journey of survival and hope!

The accident happened while Ethan, a spirited and adventurous boy, was out enjoying a bike ride with friends. A momentary loss of balance sent him crashing into a tree, resulting in the unimaginable—his head became internally detached from his body.

The scene was tragic, leaving everyone in shock.

The injury left him with a fracture in the head and neck joint and tears in all his supporting ligaments,” explained the Jerusalem hospital, Hadassah Medical Center Ein Kerem.

Ethan was swiftly taken to the nearest hospital. There, a team of dedicated surgeons embarked on a daring mission to save his life- an hours-long and highly complex medical endeavor.

"We knew this was an unprecedented case, but we were determined to give Ethan a fighting chance," Dr. Smith, the lead surgeon, shared.

The intricate surgery lasted several grueling hours, during which the team meticulously reattached Ethan's head to his neck. Thankfully, their unimaginable effort proved to be well worth it.

Miraculously, against all odds, the surgery was a success! Ethan's head was reattached, and the medical team breathed a collective sigh of relief.

The fact that such a child has no neurological deficits or sensory or motor dysfunction and that he is functioning normally and walking without an aid after such a long process, is no small thing,” explained Dr. Ohad Einav, an orthopedic specialist who operated on the Ethan along with Dr. Ziv Asa and team.

On This Day In History…🗿

Did you know that on this day in 1938, a man named Douglas “Wrong Way” Corrigan landed his plane in Ireland after taking the “wrong way” on his flight from New York? Supposedly, he was headed for California.

20 years earlier, on this day in 1918, Nelson Mandel was born and would grow up to become the “Father of modern South Africa”

This day in 1940 brought quite a surprise to the U.S. with the “unprecedented” election of a president to a 3rd term. Can you guess which U.S. President it was?
