OPTIMISM

Grandparents are more than just some old folks with a knack for spoiling kids- they're secret superheroes in disguise!

Science confirms that kids with active grandparents in their lives are healthier and happier. Why, you ask? Well, for starters, grandparents are masters of happiness.

A study in The Gerontologist found that strong grandparent-grandchild relationships reduce depressive symptoms in both! Need a sympathetic ear that's not your parents? Grandparents are pros at this.

They're the perfect venting partners and surprisingly cool at giving advice that kids actually listen to. Plus, they're walking history books, connecting us to our past and making family stories come alive.

Grandparents are life lesson gurus. With years of experience, they share wisdom that shapes future generations. And guess what? This relationship is a two-way street.

Kids with grandparental love in their lives have better overall well-being, and grandparents who babysit tend to live longer. Talk about a win-win!

They also help close the generational gap, providing for an overall more well-rounded development. But that's not all.

Grandparents are stability anchors in a rapidly changing world. They teach us to laugh at life's little hiccups and show us the importance of living in the present.

Their love is endless and unconditional, making them an irreplaceable part of the family fabric. Beyond the laughs and wisdom, grandparents also excel as role models and mentors.

They're the cool friends who don't have to enforce rules like parents do, making them a source of unconditional companionship and support.

As it turns out, the ever-evolving world of gerontology has uncovered quite a few reasons why kids need grandparent figures in their lives. But we all know it boils down to one- they’re just awesome!

ANIMALS

In the heart of Texas, Carrie Long, a wildlife rehabilitator extraordinaire, encountered a tiny, drenched raccoon named Jasper.

Found alone in a rainstorm, Jasper's survival wasn’t guaranteed. Long admitted to The Dodo, “We weren’t sure he was going to make it.”

But under Long's nurturing care, Jasper did survive. In fact, he thrived!

Choosing to stay at the sanctuary instead of returning to the wild, Jasper found a new purpose. He became determined to befriend an orphaned deer. Considering his experience of loneliness, he was clearly the perfect candidate to offer companionship.

Among the 75 deer at Texas Fawn and Friends, Jasper formed an extraordinary bond with a deer named Hope. “Hope was a fawn that I received in that had [also] lost her mother,” Long shared.

Their playful interactions, like Jasper climbing all over Hope, became a source of joy and wonder. Between Jasper licking Hope's face and embracing her in a hug, the duo have effectively captured hearts far and wide.

A video of them playing together has garnered over 55,000 views, showcasing their unique and heartwarming friendship. Long observes, “In the evening, she comes and lays next to him. They’ve got a cool relationship going on.”

Not only is it cool, it’s one of the most adorable we’ve seen!

💭 QUOTE OF THE DAY

“Bring up the past only if it will help to build the future, otherwise it's best to be left to sleep”

🗿 ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY…

Did you know that on this day in history in 1871, Congress repealed the U.S. income tax?

During the tumultuous days of the Civil War, Uncle Sam rolled up his sleeves and introduced the first-ever income tax in the U.S. via the Revenue Act of 1861. This temporary tax was intended to fill (and sustain) the Union's war chest.

The plot thickened in 1862 when the IRS was born, bringing with it a progressive tax rate - the more you earned, the more you contributed to the nation's cause. Fast forward to 1871 and the war drums had quieted.

The income tax was like that guest who overstayed the party. People started whispering, "Why are we still paying this?" increasingly favoring the idea of smaller government and less poking around in their wallets.

Thus, in a dramatic finale, Congress let the income tax law fade into the sunset, relying instead on the classic combo of tariffs and excise taxes. Little did people know, this was but a cliffhanger.

The income tax made a blockbuster comeback in 1913 with the 16th Amendment, ready to assume its permanent role in American lives. And so, the tale of income tax continues with more twists and turns than a rollercoaster at Uncle Sam's amusement park!

1697 - In a twist of genius, the wizard of mathematics, Isaac Newton, effortlessly solves Jean Bernoulli's 6-month head-scratcher of a problem. And he did it in just one night, likely as a bedtime brain teaser.

1784 - Benjamin Franklin gave a thumbs down to the eagle as America's symbol. The quirky founding father wished for something less predatory and more “kite-friendly.”

1838 - Tennessee stepped into the spotlight as the trailblazer of temperance by rolling out the very first prohibition law in the U.S., boldly telling its citizens to put a cork in it. Obviously, it was not a popular move.
