ANIMALS

Halloween is when the unexpected becomes reality and, in Eureka, Illinois, residents witnessed something truly unusual. An owl hilariously played “witch” for a day.

A great horned owl was captured bearing a striking resemblance to a witch soaring in the air on her broomstick after stealing a common children’s toy. The sight created waves online just in time for the Halloween season.

Eric Lind, who captured the viral video, couldn't believe his eyes. To everyone’s astonishment, the owl had snatched a stick horse toy and was parading it around mid-air, looking like a witch cruising the autumnal skies.

The footage was too good not to share. Recounting the amusing incident, Lind said, “My mom received a call from one of the neighbors telling her to look outside in the backyard at our pine tree. They had spotted the owl as it flew into the tree initially, but couldn’t quite tell what it was carrying at first.”

Lind shared photos and a video of the owl’s escapade on social media. As expected, the post exploded and the video has been viewed over 5 million times, with no shortage of hilarious comments.

SMILES

In a moment that could melt the coldest of hearts, young Andrea stood in a sunlit park, eyes covered, unaware of the life-changing surprise about to unfold.

She's encircled by faces that have become her pillars of strength since a nightmarish accident snatched her family away. Each sign she drops tells a piece of her poignant story with one obvious thread- her deep admiration for Mr. Mark, the firefighter who plucked her from the jaws of tragedy.

In the aftermath, Mr. Mark became her steadfast friend in the ensuing darkness. His weekly visits were like rays of hope, ensuring she never drowned in loneliness. His family, too, wrapped her in warmth and acceptance.

When Andrea lifts her blindfold, Mr. Mark presents her with cherished keepsakes - each a thread linking her to a past she cherishes.

The emotional crescendo doesn't stop there. Mr. Mark has something in store that will change the course of her life forever.

While Andrea's reaction is a profound symphony of shock and joy, the question is whether it’s a gift she’s willing to receive.

🗿 ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY…

Did you know that on this day over 2,000 years ago, the seeds of what we now know as Halloween were being sown?

The ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, celebrated in regions now part of Ireland, the United Kingdom, and northern France, marked the end of the harvest season and the onset of winter—a time associated with death. On the eve of their new year, October 31st, the Celts believed the veil between the living and the dead thinned, allowing spirits to return to Earth.

This belief set the stage for a night filled with both reverence and mischief.

As the Roman Empire expanded, it engulfed Celtic territories, bringing with it Roman festivals that melded with Samhain traditions. Feralia, a Roman day of honoring the dead, and a festival for Pomona, the goddess of fruit and trees, were integrated. This fusion may have given birth to the Halloween tradition of bobbing for apples.

Centuries later, as Christianity spread, the church established November 1st as All Saints' Day, a time to honor saints and martyrs. This move was likely an attempt to supplant the pagan festival with a church-sanctioned holiday. The night before All Saints' Day, once the night of Samhain, transformed into All Hallows’ Eve, and eventually, the Halloween we recognize today.

Drawing from myriad rituals throughout history, Halloween has evolved into a night of costumes, trick-or-treating, and community fun. Its origins are steeped in the blending of cultures and beliefs and remind us of its rich, diverse history.

Other fascinating occurrences include…

1517 - Notoriously defiant monk, Martin Luther, nailed his 95 Theses to a church door, calling out the Catholic Church for selling “indulgences” for money and undermining scripture. Leveraged by the printing press, his Theses spread far and wide, sparking the Protestant Reformation. This act of defiance not only changed the course of religious history but also occurred on the eve of All Saints' Day, adding a historical twist to the Halloween date.

1926 - Legendary magician Harry Houdini died on October 31st after suffering a burst appendix 6 days prior. Magic enthusiasts around the world honor the craft of illusion and mystery in tribute to Houdini as part of their Halloween celebrations on this day each year.
