Have you ever stumbled upon a whopping $5,000 in a thrift store? No? Yeah, us neither.
Yet, that's precisely what happened to Oliver Jolis, the manager of "Pick of the Litter" thrift shop in Burlingame. On what seemed like an ordinary day, as Oliver was organizing bags of donated clothes, cash just started pouring out.
"Money just started falling out," Jolis exclaimed, echoing the surprise of his co-worker Amy Walsh who added, "Money flew out of the shirt! We went 'uh oh'."
But this wasn't just a few dollars. It was a substantial $5,000 in cash.
Along with the money, Oliver found an old piece of paper with car insurance details. Determined to do the right thing, he and his team reached out to a regular donor to the store. When she arrived, she was able to correctly answer all their questions about the money.
"I said come on down I've got something for you. She came back and I gave her $5,000 in a paper bag and said 'Thank you for supporting us,'" Oliver recalled.
The grateful woman, who preferred to remain anonymous for safety reasons, expressed her admiration for Oliver's honesty.
"He could have just put the money in his pocket. Nobody would have known. But he didn't," she said.
Oliver's act of integrity didn't surprise the store's regulars. Trina Pierce, a San Mateo resident, chimed in with some praise for the local businessman.
"I wasn't surprised he found it and gave it back. We just love Oliver. The whole staff is great, but Oliver is special."
The "Pick of the Litter" thrift store is more than just a shop; it's a haven of kindness. All its profits are directed to the Peninsula Humane Society, which finds homes for countless animals, including those that are sick or injured.
The store's ethos is perfectly captured by the words of the anonymous woman: "Whatever you do in this world comes back to you ten times, be it negativity or positivity, it comes back."
Oliver is a firm believer in this philosophy and will continue looking out for those around him.

A North Carolina homeowner was in for quite the surprise when, on a Sunday morning, they found a horse lounging in their swimming pool!
The unusual discovery occurred around 9 a.m. on Sept. 10 in Wesley Chapel, a town roughly 22 miles from Uptown Charlotte. By early afternoon, the Wesley Chapel Volunteer Fire Department was on the scene, alerted by the baffled homeowner.
On arrival, firefighters were met with the sight of Ms. Lexi, a 1,200-pound horse, standing in a 6-foot deep pool.
Officials speculate that a severe storm the night before might have spooked the horse, leading her to inadvertently end up in the pool. Remarkably, Ms. Lexi remained calm and patiently waited for her unexpected predicament to be noticed. A lady never frets, of course!
Rescuing Ms. Lexi was no small feat.
By 3 p.m., with the combined efforts of multiple departments, the horse was finally free. The rescue operation involved a mechanical rope system and a large slide board to pull her out. To help Ms. Lexi stand upright, crews employed a tow truck and special large animal straps. Throughout the ordeal, a veterinarian was present, ready to provide any necessary care.
Thankfully, the story has a happy ending. Ms. Lexi, who belongs to the property owner, was unharmed by her pool adventure.
Three organizations assisted in the rescue, including members from the Cabarrus County Large Animal Rescue Task Force, Midland Fire and Rescue, and the Georgeville Fire Department. Photos from the scene captured the collaborative effort, including a wrecker's role in helping Ms. Lexi regain her footing.
