ANIMALS

In what might be Florida's slowest escape story, a 60-pound African tortoise, missing since 2020, was found trying its luck at a road-crossing.

The Putnam County Sheriff’s Office quickly realized this daring escapee wasn't your average wild tortoise. How? Well, it has a soft spot for head pats and people!

The tortoise was taken to Florida’s Wildest Animal Refuge. They were gobsmacked to learn the adventurer braved multiple North Florida winters.

They gushed on Facebook, "Talk about resilience! Missing for 3 1/2 years… Sure, it's seen better days after those chilly winters, but all's well that ends well. What a tale!"

The tortoise's family, who had been on a slow-burning search since its great escape, will soon be reunited. In 2020, the owner nostalgically posted that the tortoise had been part of the family "since it hatched."

For those not in the know, African tortoises can live up to 150 years and can weigh as much as a decent-sized human.

The kicker of this story? Just how far he didn’t get.

ANIMALS

In the picturesque village of Quechee, Vermont, a heartwarming bird tale ensues. Ferrisburgh, an American kestrel, has emerged an unexpected artist.

Named after the Vermont town where he was discovered, Ferrisburgh has transitioned from flight ambassador to a torch of inspiration by leading art classes for eager learners.

The Vermont Institute of Natural Science (VINS) is home to many avian ambassadors. During one of these special classes, attendees first meet Westford, another kestrel, as he dances in the air and captivates the audience. But the crescendo of excitement builds when Ferrisburgh's distinct call announces his grand entrance.

The main event? Witnessing this magnificent bird of prey create art on canvas.

Ferrisburgh's artistic journey is as touching as his paintings. After a broken bone grounded Ferrisburgh from flying, Lexie Smith, an Environmental Educator, introduced him to the world of art.

Smith believed that Ferrisburgh, who was imprinted by humans as a chick and sees himself more as a human than a bird, would find solace in painting. While he may no longer soar the skies, Ferrisburgh's found a new way to spread his wings, and he’s leaving a trail of beautiful artwork in his wake.

🗿 ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY…

Did you know on this day in 1593, the first recorded "teleportation" in human history unfolded? No joke! The enigmatic tale centers around Gil Perez, a Spanish soldier in Manila, Philippines.

Following the assassination of Governor Gómez Pérez Dasmariñas, Perez wearily leaned against a wall while guarding the Governor's Palace for a brief respite. When he opened his eyes, though, he found himself somewhere else entirely.

He’d apparently been whisked away to Mexico City, over 9,000 nautical miles away. This is in 1593, mind you.

His sudden appearance in a foreign uniform and his knowledge of recent events in the Philippines—information yet to reach Mexico—led to his arrest on charges of desertion and witchcraft.

However, fate had a twist. Months later, a ship from the Philippines arrived in Mexico bearing news of the Governor's assassination.

Perez’s fortunes changed when a passenger recognized Perez and even mentioned that the last he’d seen Perez was the day after the assassination, corroborating the bizarre tale, leading to his release.

Later on down the line…

1836 - Times got lit when Alonzo Dwight Phillips was granted the earliest American patent for a phosphorus friction match. Talk about being small but mighty- the introduction of matches into the everyday setting made everyone’s life easier and even illuminated new pathways in industry.

1851 - The cosmos unfurled its mysteries a little more when British astronomer William Lassell trained his telescope on the distant Uranus. When he did, he spotted two of its moons, Ariel and Umbriel, for the first time. The celestial revelation delighted Victorian-era stargazers and significantly broadened the understanding of our solar system.

1881 - The clang of the very first rivet driven into the Statue of Liberty was struck by Levi P. Morton, then US ambassador to France.

1901 - Annie, a 63-year-old Civil War widow, became the embodiment of audacity as she rolled over Niagara Falls in a barrel. While the stunt didn’t land her the pile of cash she was hoping for, she emerged from the misty falls with a legacy etched in daredevilry.
