TALENT

Boogie-woogie is renowned for its fast pace and infectious energy, but when Sondre and Tanya hit the dance floor, they transform it into an entirely new art form.

Starting with the traditional rapid-fire steps that define the style, they seamlessly transition into moments of slow, deliberate movement. These pauses do more than just break up tempo, though.

They’re pivotal movements that add a steamy layer of sensuality to their routine. The finesse with which they pull it off makes all eyes in attendance appreciate the contrast and complexity of each move.

Their performances are carefully choreographed to maintain the energetic essence of boogie-woogie while interspersing these slower, more intimate sequences. Their ability to connect with each other and the music on a deeper level is about as mesmerizing as it gets.

Each performance by Sondre and Tanya is a dynamic display of athleticism and grace, punctuated by moments that almost feel like the world stops spinning. It’s this style and grace that draws the audience deeper into their dance story.

Offstage, Sondre and Tanya are equally passionate about sharing their love for dance. From their beginnings in Norway and Ukraine to winning international championships, they teach a range of styles.

Among them are the Lindy Hop, Charleston, and, of course, boogie-woogie. They bring the same energy and innovation to their teaching, inspiring students with their dedication and creative approach to dance.

Watching Sondre and Tanya perform is a captivating experience. They’re masters in their class with an added touch of sensuality that could make anyone a little hot under the collar.

The video of this particular dance flaunts their precision and passion in equal measure, and you won’t want to miss it!

ANIMALS

In 1999, the South African conservationist Lawrence Anthony took a bold step by welcoming 9 troubled elephants into Thula Thula, his wildlife reserve.

Known for their Houdini-like escape acts and their penchant for trouble, these elephants were on the brink of being culled due to their disruptive antics in local villages. That’s when Lawrence decided to step in.

Lawrence's approach to managing these wayward giants was nothing short of daring. With electric fences proving no match for their determination, the elephants continuously broke free.

Led by their fierce matriarch Nana, who took on the role after humans poached their other matriarch, the herd kept putting themselves at risk. Waiting just outside the fence lines of Thula Thula were nearby hunters, always ready and eager for an easy target.

Amidst this tension, Lawrence attempted a radical form of communication, spending countless nights by the fences, speaking directly to Nana. In fact, he was pleading with her, urging her to keep her herd within the safe boundaries of the reserve.

His persistent efforts to connect and communicate with the elephants began to pay off. One morning, in a profound moment of mutual understanding, Nana extended her trunk and gently touched Lawrence's hand.

It was a gesture that marked the beginning of a new chapter for everyone at Thula Thula. This bond deepened over time, fundamentally changing the way the elephants viewed their enclosures—not as cages, but as protections.

The true depth of this bond was heartbreakingly illustrated when Lawrence unexpectedly passed away. In what was an extraordinary display of animal empathy and perhaps mourning, the entire herd of elephants, now numbering 21, made a solemn journey across the reserve to his house.

They stood vigil, a silent tribute to the man who had not only saved their lives but had also understood them like no other. What’s more is they return each year on the same day to pay respects to the man who saved their lives.

A video montage showing the unfathomable depth of their bond shows that Lawrence was a man worth honoring.

💭 QUOTE OF THE DAY

"A woman is like a tea bag – you never know how strong she is until she gets in hot water.”

-Eleanor Roosevelt

🗿 ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY…

Did you know that on this day in 1777, a 16-year-old girl thundered onto the pages of American Revolutionary history?

With the urgency of a looming attack from the British, Sybil Ludington mounted her horse and embarked on a treacherous 40-mile journey through the dark, unpaved roads of New York.

She was determined to warn her father's militia, led by Colonel Henry Ludington, and rally the troops to prepare for battle. As the night air whipped her face, Sybil braved potential capture and the dangers of being a young woman in the wilderness, to alert every militiaman she could.

Through dense woods and against the ticking clock of the enemy's advance, Sybil exemplified true bravery and strategic impact.

Her ride was a crucial moment in the American Revolution, akin to the famed midnight ride of Paul Revere, though she traveled twice the distance at a much younger age.

She remained largely unrecognized for centuries. Today, however, Sybil Ludington is celebrated as a heroine.

Other notable events include…

1514 - Copernicus caught his first glimpse of Saturn as he peered through his telescope. This observation laid the groundwork for the heliocentric theory that revolutionized astronomy.

1564 - William Shakespeare was baptized in the quaint town of Stratford-upon-Avon, marking his first official appearance in historical records. Little did anyone know, this baby would become the Bard who’s captivated audiences for centuries.

1904 - The Bell Telephone Company of Antwerp was founded, ringing in a new era of communication in Belgium. This company would go on to connect voices across continents.

1977 - Studio 54 flung its doors open in New York City and instantly became the hotspot for the city’s elite party animals.
