Elephant Free After 40 Years of Enslavement

Thong Bai, a legendary Thai bull elephant, spent over 40 years entertaining tourists, appearing in advertisements, and participating in events across Thailand.

His story, shared by Lek Chailert, founder of The Elephant Sanctuary, tells the journey of an elephant who served people for decades without fail. He deserved his freedom.

"More than forty years he has served people, and he deserves his freedom," Lek notes, emphasizing the need for change.

The turning point came when Khun NuNa Silpa-archa visited Surin province and witnessed Thong Bai's situation firsthand. Moved by what she saw, she committed to helping him gain the respect and freedom he deserved.

Her efforts, along with those of the community, led to Thong Bai's release from chains. The moment marked the beginning of a new chapter in his life, and a much happier one at that.

Thong Bai's new home is within the Surin Project. The Project is an initiative aimed at improving the living conditions of working elephants and their mahouts.

Thanks to a collective effort, including support from Thai Beverage and the Surin government, Thong Bai now enjoys a spacious enclosure with a fountain, ample mud, shade, and room to roam freely—without chains.

The day Thong Bai stepped into his new home marked a significant moment of liberation. "The day that everyone longed for has finally arrived. Over four decades of shackles and at last release," Lek wrote.

Did you know that on this day in 1516, superstar scholar of the Renaissance, Desiderius Erasmus, wrapped up an epic feat of translation? It's called the "Novum Instrumentum omne," and it's the first-ever New Testament published in Greek.

Why is this a big deal, you ask? Well, before Erasmus worked his magic, the Christian world was knee-deep in the Latin Vulgate, a version of the Bible that had its fair share of "oopsies" due to centuries of telephone-game-style translations.

Enter Erasmus, armed with his intellect and a passion for accuracy. He didn't just throw together another book. He painstakingly compiled and edited the Greek text, threw in his own Latin translation, and basically said, "Here, have the real deal."

This wasn't done purely out of scholarly flex, either. It was a revolution on paper.

The "Novum Instrumentum omne" lit the fuse for the Protestant Reformation, empowering reformers like Martin Luther to translate the Bible into the vernacular and bring it to the masses.

Thanks to Erasmus' hustle, the Bible wasn't just for the elite anymore—it was everyone's game. And just like that, a Dutch Renaissance man became the unsung hero of biblical history.
